Turning Viewers Into Entrenched Voyeurs

It seems these days that even  the most  dramatic, respected  and creative  television shows  eventually flaunt and promote unbridled, carefree and unprotected sex as the answer to their series flagging viewer rating.

This usually happens after the third or fourth episode when the viewer numbers have been compiled and the networks and advertisers are eager to boost exposure and sales. Network managers are willing to take a chance on new dramatic content and more receptive to innovative writing.

The Nielsen viewer ratings have been successfully compiled by this time and a television home viewing market selected within which a show's writing team can become "creative" oftentime using gratuitous sex to overcome writing lapses and lulls between commercials.

Two such shows that pop into mind are "King"and "Suits". Both shows are presented on the Showcase network.The plots and the writing  are first rate. Initially the sexual nature of the show's characters was downplayed and the legal angle highlighted. On the premium channel a viewer content warning is flashed between commercial segments indicating "adult content view discretion is advised."

"King" is a tough female cop who has been divorced a number of times and likes her sex hot and heavy. She is nearing forty, wears tight skirts and is desperately trying to get pregnant. She is the head of a crime division in a large metropolitan city. At times she lets her biological clock run her common sense. This aspect may make her appealling to all those female viewers in her particular life situation.

"Suits"  main characters are Harvey Specter" and  "Mike Ross". For Harvey a romp in the hay is an accepted pro bono aspect of the job.  Recently Ross has also been priming the pump for female companionship.  Specter is a talented, conniving, no holds barred successful attorney possessing street smarts and an over active libido. Ross is his protege with a photographic memory whom he is tutoring in the law firm.

Eventually though the main characters in both shows abandon their higher callings and are eager to tear off their clothing, hop into bed with  any available and consenting member of the opposite sex.  This allows three to five minutes of air time to successfully transpire. This on-screen action is supposed to turn the viewing audience into consenting adult voyeurs.

The popularity of both shows has attracted the attention of the non premium channels. The channels do flash the viewer warning adult content notice at the start of the show. So an at home viewer expects some adult content not out-and-out orgy action. What does a parent do when their children are in the same room with them while they are watching the juicier segments?

In this age of sexually transmitted diseases, herpes, genital warts, AIDs and the like dramatic televison shows should offer the viewing public richer content and more thought provoking themes and try not to merely pander the easily gratuitous side of life .

If this is an impossible task then at least have the main characters enage in protected sex before they dazzle the viewer with their bedroom prowess.

 

Letting Her Steady Boy Friend Sleep Over?

As a parent would you lose any sleep if your teenage daughter innocently and somewhat matter of factly one day asked you if her steady boyfriend could sleep over?

Would this issue raise your emotional hackles , concerns and neurotic fears as to the safety and emotional well being of your daughter?

A representative number of present day authors have stated that an increasing number of parents in Holland have already crossed this highly charged emotional sea of concern and do allow their daughter's "steady" boyfriend to sleep over but with certain stipulations.

According to one published report Dutch parents have normalized such sexual liasons in the hope of indirectly maintaining an infleunce in their teens lives.

In the U.S. parents feel they lack the overall moral authority to sanction such actions because they engaged in sex at an early age.

Lines of communication between parents and teens are not seriously strained as they are in the United States where parents at times feel guilty for having themselves engaged in sex at an early age.

Parents feel that they are losing control of their teenagers. The want to protect them from harm not realizing that their "children" are maturing and not really abandoning the nest as much as seeking support , understanding and guidance from their parents.

The parental "not under my roof" attitude often leads to unprotected sexual activity, increased teen pregnancy and the transmission of sexually communicable diseases. Sex is entered into hastily and the back seat of a car or a seedy motel room is the birthplace for many years of bitterness and tensions.

The Dutch approach to sex is not a laid back attitude promoting sexual license. The boyfriend must be the daughter's steady and must also fit into the family scheme of things. This is not a one night stand situation. It is more of a preventative measure to ensure that parents and teens communicate in an honest and open manner.

Parents in the United States at times  are way too squeamish to have the necessary sex talk with their children. Boys are coerced into being sexual beings way before they are emotionally prepared to be.

Girls are often routinely treated by their loving and doting parents as asexual beings ... daddy's little girl waiting for the right Prince Charming to come into her life. Mr Right seldom does show up.

This current "sleep over dilemma" is a situation that can be easily managed if parents and teens be honest with one another, keep their lines of communication and trust open and seek guidance from school, church or health professionals willing to assist parents and teens with this emotionally charged situation.

New Moms Offered Breast Feeding Stations

These days it appears that breast feeding is becoming a truly vanishing art in the United States . Many nursing mothers are socially embarrassed to feed their babies in public.

In their minds a certain social stigma is  immediately attached to a woman who  brazenly feeds her baby in a public place.

Many women seek a private space where they can feed their babies and not face public censure or social criticism. Although roughly 70 per cent of women try breast feeding in the hospital the number quickly dwindles after six months when only 30 per cent continue to do so.

Other countries worldwide are also being influenced by this cultural standard so much so that one would imagine that breast feeding is on the decline.  Nursing mothers, one would assume, would rather opt out of the breast feeding ritual and bottle feed their babies. Is there hope for these women?

On a recent visit to one of the mega malls merchandisers I happened to notice that a new addition to the store directory was recently added: nursing station. This feature was added to the store's floor space within the past month.

A brief chat with the department manager informed me that there was a growing demand from a significant number of female customers asking if such a private location could be offered to them.

The store's marketing staff received a number of written and verbal requests from women interested in having access to such an area so they could successfully feed their infants.

The idea was discussed at both the local and the national level and it was decided that such a plan of action would be initiated beginning in June 2011.

Since its implementation the number of women requesting access to the room has been significant. The room is well ventilated, secure, well maintained and stocked with those essential items a nursing mother might require.

This is a positive and innovative attempt by a well known , national merchandiser to accomodate a segment of its market. The company apparently realized the plight these women were facing and decided to do something to alleviate their stress.

The word shame used liberally can convert a very natural act such as breast feeding into an action worthy of criticism. The concept of sin or shame should not be injected into an act that is both life sustaining and special.

Cultural influences create taboo subjects about certain acts and ways of behaving. In this instance cultural enlightenment and customer response has given nursing mothers a private place to breast feed their infant and not become subject to public censure.

 

 

 

 

Enzyte Bob Scores High At Airport Scanners

Summer is the time of the year when an increasing number of travellers consider flying to both exotic and domestic destinations. It's the time  for relaxation and travel to new and exciting places.

A majority of these folks are prepared for the expected flight delays, cancellations, long lineups and an assortment of other airport glitches which will make their waiting time unbearable and nerve wracking.

What they dread and cannot reconcile themselves with is the thought of airport security personnel freely groping and patting down the private parts of their bodies.

The resulting flying phobia and hesitation is based on the public's sense of propriety, self consciousness and of course the embarassment --- the prospect of being groped by strangers in a public setting is not really that exciting a prospect.

The creative advertising team at Enzyte, a male enhancement product, realizing this public fear of flying , has created an opportunity for their product mascot Bob to demonstrate that passengers can and should overcome their fear of flying and not be intimidated by airport ruffians.

 The advertising skit shows a smiling Bob getting ready to be scanned, probed and harassed by a supposedly grumpy and jaded airport security team. As he steps on the metal detector the camera shot zooms in on his feet just as his jockey shorts land down at his ankles.

As he is about to be scanned by a hand held scanner the camera pans back to Bob's face. He is beaning a very wide and obvious smile...among other things. The camera then shows the faces of the security team, stewardesses, pilots and an assortment of other airport personnel smiling with obvious approval.

The ad segment could be considered off color. However the often time finicky and paranoid security personnel in the ad show their unanimous approval that Bob is not a security threat and that the contents of his under wear if not explosive but could produce fireworks under the right circumstances. Wink. Wink.

From a sociological perspective the ad is offering a wakeup call to all airport travellers who have thus far been unfairly intimidated or targeted by badly trained or ill informed security staff.

The concept of the ad is no more outlandish than the actual real life situation in which a 94-year-old grandmother was asked to lower and remove her undergarment because the security agent detected a foreign and questionable object in her sanitary diaper. Perhaps it was an undigested tidbit of badly prepared airline cuisine.

The real life horror stories of airport security infractions and abuses grows on a daily basis. So too does the public angst increase about using air travel as a means of transportation.

It's up to advertisers and creative marketing companies to take as aggressive a stance on this topic as the people at Enzyte have assumed. It is time to inject a healthy amount of humor and surprise into those areas of life which have been colored by dread, fear and irrationality.

We all know of men who postpone this examination due to embarassment and eventually contracted the disease. These men, who may have been brave and unflinching in their daily lives, actually detested the thought of visiting their family physician.

Smoking definitely increases the risk that men who develop prostate cancer will die from their disease. The longer that men have smoked the greater the risk.

The overall exam is a somewhat invasive procedure but the end result of not having the exam is far more intimidating. The choice is not a difficult one to make. The result will ensure that your loved ones will have you around for a much longer time.

If you have a digital video recording device (DVR) hooked up to your television set you know how convenient it is to tape your favorite program and watch it later at a time convenient to you.

If you are like most television viewers who hate sitting through the commercials accompanying your programs you merely press a button on the DVR and fast forward through them.

However by rushing past some commercials you may actually be missing out on important health warnings and advice offered by those pharmaceutical companies producing products aimed at your own specific market niche.

A number of the more dominantly advertised commercials are especially troubling. They deal with sleeplessness, erectile dysfunction , osteoporosis and asthma. These seem to be the prevailing afflictions troubling many people these days.

The content and structure of the commercials fall along a spectrum ranging from entertainment, information, availabilty and warning. The overall general appeal of the commercial itself captures the viewers attention as they were planned to do. The companies have a product to sell and they do need to entice an accepting audience.

After they have enticed you and have you sold on the product they throw out a litany of warnings telling you that the product may cause you to experience the following symptoms:

     (a) an erection lasting more than four hours

     (b) tongue swelling or difficulty breathing

     (c) hallucinations and thoughts of suicide

     (d) rapid heartbeat or elevated blood pressure

 

These drugs have supposedly received FDA approval and therefore should have been thoroughly tested and developed before being marketed to the public.

The excessive amount of hype and warning given at the end of the commercials apparently vindicates the manufacturers of the drugs from any wrongdoing thus allowing them to offer their product to the public with a clear conscience.

The responsibility is left with the consumer to judge for him or herself  if the reward benefits the drug offers outweighs the health problems which may arise from their useage.

Back in the day Alka Seltzer and Bayer Aspirin were the heavy weight contenders advertised on television. Plop plop  ...fizz fizz were the safe and reliable way to alleviate your upset tummy. Take two Aspirin and you knew your headache pain would be handled.

Today slick marketing techniques and part time out-of-work Hollywood movie producers create commercials which not only entertain us but also throw a melodramatic warning and scare into our actions.

More research and development should be done before these types of consumer driven pharmaceuticals are peddled to the public. Don't order any free samples the manufacturers may offer you. Consult your physician if you are considering using these products.

 

Is The Blue Viagara Elephant Mascot An Example Of Limp Humor?

Erectile dysfunction (E.D.) is a common enough symptom these days. The medical and or social causes of the symptom are truly beyond the scope of this article.  

Many men consider it to be a wake up call to the undeniable fact that they are getting older. Others accept the fact that they are no longer as sexually viable and vibrant as they once were.

The marketing geniuses at Viagara -  a reknowned manufacturer of this type of male enhancement product --  have for quite some time now adopted an advertising mascot ( a blue elephant) aimed at driving home their own particular message.

Seeing pink elephants when you are totally done in by alcohol is perfectly acceptable. The mention of this color pachyderm in jokes always arouses humor and good cheer. Depicting a blue (depressed) elephant as a limp sexual appendage does irritate a good number of men and women.

A recent poll asked the question , "Do you consider the blue elephant mascot associated with Viagara commercials to be demeaning and prejudical towards men with E.D.?"

A number of the respondents, 14.29 percent, indicated that the intent of the commercial is to sell a male enhancement product and not outrightly humiliate men afflicted with E.D.

Another 14.29 percent stated that the elephant is depressed (blue) because of its physical situation and saw Viagara as a product meant to save the day. For many men that was an easy pill to swallow.

Roughly 28.95 percent of men polled stated outright that men who felt threatened by this harmless and humorous commercial need counselling and not a quick Viagara fix.

The ad was considered by over 43 percent of those polled as a slick and clever marketing strategy meant to get its message across quickly and effectively using a harmless mascot.

Women described the ad as disgusting and not worthy of further comment.

The manufacturers of Viagara should adopt a more humane approach to their advertising model. Cialis has a milder, much less juvenile approach to marketing their product to a ready made market.

There is a time for humor and a time and place for sensitivity.  Evidently, the people at Viagara still have a long way to go in their learning curve regarding humorous advertising and bawdy sarcasm.

 

 

 

Pharma Sutra Replaces The Learning Curve Of The Kama Sutra

The Kama Sutra  (Kamasutraṃ or simply Kamasutra), is an ancient Indian Hindu text widely considered to be the standard work on human sexual behavior written in Sanskrit literature by Mallanāga Vātsyāyana.

Vātsyāyana is the name of a Hindu philosoper in the Vedic tradition who is considered to have lived during time of the Gupta Empire  (4th to 6th centuries) in India. His name appears as the author of the Kama Sutra.

Hardly anything is known about him. His real name is supposed to be Mallinaga or Mrillana, Vatsyayana being his family name. At the close of the work this is what he writes about himself

"Kāma" means sensual or sexual pleasure, and "sūtra" literally means a thread or line that holds things together. It more metaphorically refers to an aphorism (or line, rule, formula), or a collection of such aphorisms in the form of a manual. The modern English word "suture" is derived from the same root.

A portion of the work , written largely in prose, consists of practical advice regarding sexual intercourse. This ancient sex manual depicts differing sexual positions which, if mechanically and faithfully followed,  is guaranteed to provide bliss and fulfillment for the engaging couple. Nirvanna for one and all!

These days,  modern pharmacology has replaced the time consuming ritual of trial-and-error associared with the Karma Sutra.  Male enhancement drugs promise men suffering from the embarrassing condition known as Erectile Dysfunction (ED) a quick and easy fix. A lesser 9 per cent indicated that they would take all the drugs necessary to guarantee that they are alive and still active in the game of life.

Whichever plan a person follows is a personal choice. Remember that a majority of these male enhancement drugs also warn potential customers to seek medical advice first to determine if they are suitable customers to use this type of product.

Remember also to include your signifcant other in the supposed life enhancing situation. Open and honest communication between yourself  and your spouse or significant other might be more important than merely being ready when the moment is right.
